Roleplaying is where participants adopt and act out the role of characters, or parts, that may have personalities, motivations, and backgrounds different from their own. Roleplaying is like being in an improvisational drama or free-form theatre, in which the participants are the actors who are playing parts.
What makes roleplaying different from theatre is that a roleplayer is not only the actor but also the audience ?
Role-playing in the form of historical re-enactment has been practiced by adults for millennia as well. The ancient Romans, Han Chinese, and medieval Europeans all enjoyed occasionally organizing events which everyone pretended to be from an earlier age, and entertainment appears to have been the primary purpose of these activities. Within the 20th century historical reenactment has often been pursued as a hobby.
I bring up the definition of Roleplaying and provide a little history behind it to make sure we are on the same page by what we mean by, “Roleplaying”.
It seems some people come here with the idea that roleplaying is all sabers and blasters, shooting each other till the last one is standing and able to declare victory.
Granted, this is “Star Wars” and there will be an occational battle or even war. But this is not what occurs on a day to day routine. We’ve all watched the movies, the fighting means nothing without the storyline.
I’ll emphasize it again, the fighting and wars in the Star Wars movies are of Epic proportions, battles are waged to determine the fate of worlds and galaxies. How popular would the movies be if there was nothing but shooting and saber fighting everywhere in complete disorder having no meaning?
The “In Character” section which is ment exclusively for Roleplaying.
the “In Character” also abbrivated the IC area, is the area where we are now, and the area in which this lecture is about. This lecture, is what we call, “Out of Character”, abbrivated /me OOC: talking.
Ah ha!!! You should be saying to yourself, why is it that I’m talking /me OOC: in the IC area? Well we aren’t perfect, and staying IC all the time is a difficult task indeed.
That is one of the reasons NOJ is a “teaching order” we are here to “teach” you how to roleplay, or at least provide an area in which you can “practice” your roleplaying skills.
If you only learn one thing here today, please let it be this………..I’ve come up with two easy to follow “guidlines”. Practice these two guidelines alone, and I promise your Roleplaying skills will dramatically improve.
Refuse to talk OOC: in the IC area, if somebody is talking OOCly pretend like you don’t understand their “language”. Try to help them say what they want to say in an IC way. If all else fails, Instant Message them.
If your roleplaying is leading to combat, only fight with your friends.
It’s ok to be OOC: friends with an IC enemy. There’s less chance of feelings to get hurt and a friend will appologize if something goes wrong.
That’s it!!!! That’s what I’ve come up with that I believe personally will improve all of our Roleplaying experiences. It’s that simple.
Now I will open the floor for each of you to ask questions or tell us what YOU believe will improve our experience. Please Instant message me that you have something to say, and I will call on you in the order that I receive them. Thank you.
Zoffa Morico: “my tip to RP well”.
Zoffa Morico: I would say to remember how you would really behave if you were “really” on a SW planet…..
Zoffa Morico: would you talk about the latest TV show? Or discuss the adventures you’ve had on other planets….
